คำอธิบาย The nanofibrillar cellulose (CNF) is a unique material obtained from naturally occurring cellulose fibers. Herein, we investigated the potential use of commercially wood residues from furniture industries, Para rubber wood sawdust, as a solid electrolyte membrane. To prepare the CNF, the wood sawdust was pretreated with NaOH and Na2S and bleached with NaClO2. The bleached cellulose was then hydrolyzed with 64%wt of H2SO4 at 45 oC for 30 min. The obtained CNF was modified using 5-sulfoisophthalic acid sodium salt (SIPA) with concentration ranging from 0-30 %wt to improve proton conductivity. The FTIR spectra showed that esterification between -OH groups of nanofibrillar cellulose and -COOH groups of SIPA occurred. Ion exchange capacities (IEC) of the SIPA-modified CNF membranes increased with SIPA concentration. The water uptake was in the range of 36-75%. The proton conductivities of the SIPA-modified CNF membranes varied in the range of 10-3 to 10-2 S/cm, depending on the SIPA content. The CNF modified with SIPA concentration higher than 15 %wt showed the improve in proton conductivities as compared with the CNF membrane. The SIPA-modified CNF has the potential to be developed and used as an environmental friendly polymer electrolyte membrane in future fuel cell applications.
